Abhorred as an atheist, reviled as a republican, and loathed as an advocate of birth control, Charles Bradlaugh was one of the most detested men in mid-Victorian England. She subsequently became a socialist and theosophist so distancing herself from the man who had been her constant companion. Charles Bradlaugh was a man far greater than Karl Marx, who has proven he was ahead of his time. He pioneered Women's Rights, Birth Control, Atheism, Irish Home Rule and Republicanism. He fought against Establishment corruption and the illusory utopia of Socialism for the common man. He suffered so many travails, it is impossible to understand how he soldiered on, through false claims, numerous forced bankruptcies and state harassment. He was loved as an orator in New York and admired in France. Bryan Niblett has done a wonderful job in telling the story of a boy who left school at 12, used bookstalls as his library and became the greatest advocate in the British Empire taking on the state itself.
Bryan Niblett has written what will go down as the definitive biography of Charles Bradlaugh as a public figure. A barrister himself, Niblett thoroughly understands and very clearly explains the legal and parliamentary battles Bradlaugh spent much of his life fighting. Since these legal battles occupied so much of Bradlaugh's time and energy, at the expense of private life and family, it will come as no surprise that Niblett's account shares its subject's focus. That said, Niblett provides a detailed and sensitive depiction of Bradlaugh's adult life; which will captivate readers new to the story, and satisfy old friends of Bradlaugh.
